The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson - Book Review

First of all, I really enjoyed this book. I loved the character development and the characters themselves. Morgan Matson does a phenomenal job with her storytelling so that you can picture every moment.
The reason I gave this book was because I felt like there wasn't a sense of uniqueness to it that Matson's earlier novel Since You've Been Gone had.
This is not at all to say that I didn't enjoy the book, but I think it was a little slow to get into, and didn't have that spark.

The Unexpected Everything is about Andie who plans everything. Her mom died when she was young and her dad is a politician so she's basically raised herself. She's not alone though. She has a fantastic group of friends who are always by her side. But, she doesn't know how to open up. Because of her dad's career she has had to keep so much in, she no longer knows how to open up.
Then she meets Clark and his creative personality and forwardness begin to crack Andie's shell.

I would definitely say this is one worth picking up, and another huge success by Morgan.

“You have to try. You have to take your chances. Go and attempt and see what happens. And even if you fail - especially if you fail - come back with your experience and your hard-won knowledge and a story you can tell. And then later you can say, without regret or hesitation... 'Once, I dared to dare greatly”

Carry on by Rainbow Rowell - Book Review

So let me start by saying that I absolutely adore Rainbow. I had read Fangirl before this and loved it. Which is what made me pick up Carry On.

The World of Mages is similar to that of Harry Potter, but the character dynamics are a bit different.

It starts in their (Simon, Baz and the gang) 8th year at Watford. Simon is the chosen one and Baz is his arch nemesis when the book begins.
However, revelations are quickly made and the characters begin to grow.

Overall, I think my favorite character was Baz, because of his tough guy attitude and his vulnerable heart.

I would definitely recommend reading Fangirl first, but it's not essential because there are no references between the two.

In my opinion this is a must read!

“You have to pretend you get an endgame. You have to carry on like you will; otherwise, you can't carry on at all.”

I have just picked up Carry On by Rainbow Rowell!
I'm super excited to read this novel. I've heard great things, and loved the characters from their appearances in Cath's fanfiction in Rainbow Rowell's earlier novel Fangirl.

Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys - Book Review

This book was a completely pleasant surprise. I’m not a huge historical fiction fan, however Salt to the Sea may have changed my mind on the genre. The novel had 4 main characters named Joana, Florian, Emilia, and Alfred. Each four characters narrates their own chapter, but each point of view has a slightly different twist.
Alfred is a young Nazi soldier who greatly overestimates his importance in the war. Most of his point of view is written in letters to his beloved Hannelore who isn’t  all she seems to be which you find as you continue to read.
Emilia is a young polish girl who is running from the Germans and the Russians. She is far from home and longing for her late mother and stillborn little brother. However, you find that Emilia, though young, is one of the bravest of them all.
Florian is an artist. He wasn’t conscripted for the Nazi party because of his position as a restoration artist. But at the time the novel takes place Florian is on the move with forged papers and on a mission, until he meets Joana.
I have to say Joana was my favorite of all four main characters (but the others were no less remarkable). Joana is Lithuanian but because of her German heritage, reaccepted into the country and now serves as a nurse with a group of runaways trying to escape the advancing Soviets. She is a determined former academic who feels she missed out on life, because of her studies. Until she meets Florian who shows her beautiful things she didn’t know before.
The characters made the story element of this book, but the sheer realness and history made the novel. I can say that Salt to the Sea is in my top three for this year. If you’re looking for a realistic novel with spunky characters and odd sense of family, this is the book for you.

Guilt is a hunter.
Fate is a hunter.
Shame is a hunter.
Fear is a hunter.”
